Help Support Plunge Magazine

Plunge Magazine is/will be an ezine focusing on genre literature featuring queer women.

By genre, I mean, fantasy, scifi, mysteries, westerns, noir, end-of-the-world, thrillers, political, *punk, etc.

By queer, I mean, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, genderqueer,  panexual, and every other form of queer.

By women, I mean, sentient entities (humans, aliens, AIs, talking animals, etc) who identify as female.

The ezine will publish short stories, poetry, and nonfiction articles.

If you want more about women who happen to be queer, then check out Plunge.

If you want to make this ezine a reality, please (a) give via Kickstarter, and (b) spread the word throughout your networks.

When Teyla was a child many people lost their way traveling between towns and new places. Trees would overgrow old paths, or rain would flood rivers and lakes. Teyla helped as many people as she could, but still more remained lost and unfound. Tired of hearing the same stories from so many mouths, Teyla made up her mind to leave home and find a way she could help everyone who went astray. So she strapped her favorite doll to her hip and her fighting sticks to her back, and she wandered into the woods.

Woods back then were terrifying places. They continued to grow despite the lack of light, and, in summer, their leaves were so thick that no light from any of the seven stars could pierce through at all. But Teyla, alone and without a lamp of any kind, did not fear. For, even surrounded by the deepest darkness, she always knew where to set her feet.

Teyla walked until time lost meaning. She hungered; she ate. She tired; she slept. And always she walked, following the path her heart knew was true.

One night, her feet led her to a clearing deep within the wood. That night, when she lay down to sleep, she could see the seven stars, the seven souls who had carried John and whom he loved. The star for which she'd been named, the Emmagan, was the seventh. Emma had been a young woman who had become pregnant shortly after John pulled her away from the darkness and granted her another year of life. She spent her last breaths giving birth to her daughter, and John used the very last of her breath to create her star in the sky.

Though only a child, Teyla was wise, and she could well-imagine the pain Emma might have felt, dying just as her daughter began to cry. She remembered many young mothers and fathers weeping over children who had, at one moment been playing, and at the other missing. And, Teyla began singing. She sang of lost people, of dark nights and days, of nightmares and fear, and separation. She sang out her loneliness, her tiredness, and her ceaseless determination.

And her song reached the stars, building a ladder only her hands and feet could find. Teyla climbed three days and nights until she reached the seven stars. She held counsel with the stars, though she's forever kept secret what was said and sold. And, after long many nights of negotiation, the stars all shed some of their souls and shine for Teyla spread across the sky. Two years passed as she made long treks across the heavens, spreading out pathways to guide those walking below.

When she finally returned home, a young woman bare of doll and sticks, she still shone, bits of star stuck in her eyes and hair, smile and skin. She taught her people how to read the pathways hidden in the stars and call them all by name.

Delicious Alternatives

Disclaimer: I have only used Xmarks and Google bookmarks on this list. I love the former and can't stand the latter. Also, I tend to be a private person about my link links, so there may be some secret and amazing social aspects to Xmarks and Google bookmarks that I just never discovered. These are not the only possible sites out there, but they all seem stable and enduring. For the other sites I've relied on the websites and off-site reviews.

(1) Xmarks
Pros: Very easy to use cross-browser sync, ability to share only certain folders with others, stable with active and dedicated user base, provides link ratings and reviews on Google, links are also accessible online, Firefox & Chrome add-ons, can create different profiles for home/work/etc computers
Cons: No public API, very weak social aspects (you can access the ranks/reviews and add reviews, but not much more), del.icio.us import only takes your 100 most recent links
PC World Reviews, Think Digit Review (Mentions the newly implemented premium features; the premium features though are more in thanks of support than anything else, imo, Ars Technica Review

Tags are the issue with Xmarks. If the tags show up when you import your del.icio.us files to Firefox/other browser, they they should also sync with Xmarks. Some people have had trouble with this, though. One workaround is Transmute, but I'm not 100% sure how that would work.

(2) Diigo
Pros: Can sign in via FB/twitter/others, easy annotations, can create groups, stable and popular, Firefox & Chrome add-on, can save and annotate webpages as well as links (so, like evernote+del.icio.us, maybe), provides a way to import from del.icio.us
Cons: Uses a toolbar, some people have had trouble with the import feature
CNet Review, App Appeal Review

(3) Mister Wong
Pros: Can sign in via FB, image oriented, popular in Europe, multi-lingual support, Firefox add-on, includes an import for del.icio.us bookmarks
Cons: No public API
Mashable Mention, App Appeal Review

(4) Faviki
Pros: Semantic aka common tagging (tags are same across accounts), an up-and-comer, provides an easy import from del.icio.us
Cons: Semantic tagging (tags rely on wikipedia/dbpedia/etc entries), not very fan-oriented
App Appeal Review, ReadWriteWeb Review

(5) Google Bookmarks
Pros: Stable, easy to use, doesn't require opening a new account anywhere, links accessible online
Cons: Little control over how links are imported, very weak social features (you can access public lists, but little else)

If you have more, please share! Also, if you use or have used one of the above, please share your experiences.

Other Sites

Pinboard (not free, price rises with size of user base)
Histori.us (free only for the first 300 links, but tags will stay in-tact)
ZigTag (semantic tagging)
ZooTool (open api, also newer and so you'd definitely not want to make it your only back-up)
Evernote (more designed for web clippings than managing bookmarks, even premium accounts are limited in the amount they can save per month  (1 GB))
BlinkList (another 2010 newbie)
Connotea (academic, not good for fannish links)
Zotero (academic, not good for fannish links)
Mendeley (academic; not good for fannish links, but does include a social network for papers and research sources)
Instapaper (saves links for reading later, but may not be suited for large libraries of links)
Faves.com (open API, not sure how the import work)
Transmute (basic conversion level is free, bookmark management is not)

Title: Anything-Can-Happen Thursday
Author: [info]lilyayl
Recipient: [info]wizefics
Fandom: The Big Bang Theory
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 13,264
Spoilers (if applicable): General show
Warnings (if applicable): None I can think of. Death by hair, maybe?
Prompt: The boys design some experiment that causes the end of the world. Black hole machines, time machines gone wonky, zombie viruses – take your pick. I'd really like to see them focus on trying to clean it up. Sheldon's snark makes me jump up and down, but I love all the characters. Please include Penny and give her a legitimate role of her own. She may not be booksmart, but my bets are on her to survive the apocalypse. Also, I'd prefer either gen or nongraphic het/slash for this fandom.
Author's Note: This is what I've been working on recently instead of Harry Potter. The story is in four parts and each part is linked to the next. Please read and enjoy.
Summary: After the boys accidentally cause aliens to invade the Earth, Penny helps start the Resistance to save the world.

Rating: G
Beta: attempt_unique (thank you!!!)
Summary: On September 1st, 2000 students arrive at Hogwarts for the first time in two years. Pansy is overseeing the students' arrivals when something goes wrong.
Notes: This story is part of the 'Two Years Later' universe that I share with whatifisaidno. If you have not read in this universe before, I recommend you begin with 'Rebuild What's Gone Unsteady'. There are also two one-shots, one set before this story and the other set after.
Warnings: None.

Title: A New Fad
Notes: I was not going to write Merlin!fic, but then I got into a conversation with someone (Sam, I think) and then resulted.

Hunith rifled through the bag of letters the messenger had brought from her. Nothing from her son, which did not surprise her. As dutiful as he could be, Merlin did often forget the little things-- like communication and frequent letters. Luckily, Gaius made up the slack. A few minor notices and-- she smiled. Another chapter of the story had arrived.

On some level Hunith knew that reading stories about her son was odd, but she did miss Merlin greatly and the stories were better than nothing. Besides, she had met the young prince and had to admit that maybe 'DragonMaster,' the author of the chapters, was actually keeping rather close to the truth.

Hunith read the latest chapter several times over, laughing out loud in many places, and then placed it with the others. She then pulled out her own manuscript, an alternative telling of her son's visit home, and added a brief note for DragonMaster, complimenting him on his continuing story.

When the messenger rode out the next morning, he carried with him her story, note, and letters for Gaius and Merlin, along with the other messages of the village and other surrounding villages and towns. In a few weeks, her missives would be received.

She wondered if DragonMaster would enjoy her story.

---

Gwen did not mean to rifle through the mail. Honest. A sheaf of papers just fell out and she had to put them back in order. It was not her fault that Merlin's name had caught her attention, and Arthur's. Gwen read the page quickly, her cheeks warming.

She very quickly shuffled the papers back together and shoved them back into the mail bag. That story was-- it had kissing. Arthur and Merlin. That was-- Gwen stilled-- impossible? She thought of feathered hats, flowers, sacrifice, and pride and covered her mouth, her eyes ever-wider.

She was torn between horror, laughter, and something else warmer. She could just imagine Merlin's reaction if he knew of the story; and it was that image that tipped her over into laughter.

Gwen covered her mouth with her hands and hurried up the stairs of the castle. She simply had to tell Morgana.

I am not writing for this fandom. I'm not.

Merlin. *sighs*

"Oi, Griflet, says here that it's your turn to go hunting with Arthur," Sir Caradoc motioned to the roster on the armory wall.

Sir Griflet looked up from his sword. "What? Is that servant of his going too?"

Caradoc glanced back at the roster. "What do you think?"

Griflet abandoned his sword and stood up. "No way. Not my turn." He made his way through the cluttered room to the roster.

"Yes, it is."
